When I think about summer makeup, it is lightweight, glowing and natural. The last thing anyone wants on a 90 degree summer day is a heavy, full coverage makeup look that is just going to melt off your face the minute you step outside. For me, summertime makeup is quick, easy and contains sun protection.
I have found myself gravitating toward the same simple and natural look every time I have worn makeup in the last several weeks. It checks all of my summer makeup boxes – contains SPF, is lightweight and gives your skin a gorgeous natural luminosity. I’ve been obsessed and can’t stop wearing this look, so I thought I would share with you the products I have been using and how I apply them for a perfect ‘no makeup’ makeup look!
Before applying any makeup, I always prep my skin with an oil or cream so that my makeup will apply more smoothly and not stick to any dry areas. For this look, I chose an amazing moisturizer containing sun protection – the MALU Protecting Day Cream SPF 30 from Honua Skincare. This product uses a safer physical sunblock in the form of zinc oxide, and is also completely reef safe! In fact, a percentage of the proceeds from MALU go to Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, which is a non-profit organization that educates the community how to keep the oceans clean! How amazing is that?! While this cream does use a physical sunblock, it does not leave the dreaded white cast on the skin. It rubs in completely clear without a trace of white left on the skin.
This product has been perfect for my normal to dry summer skin. It leaves my face feeling hydrated, but not greasy, and gives a great base for natural, dewy makeup. I apply two full pumps of the cream to my face and neck and let it sink into my skin for 1-2 minutes before applying my makeup.
FOUNDATION: The two products I have been pairing work beautifully together and have been giving my skin the perfect summer glow! I start with one pump of the W3LL People Bio Tint Multi-Action Moisturizer SPF 30 (I wear the shade ‘Light’) and then mix in 1-2 drops of the absolutely stunning Maya Chia The Highlight of the Day Illuminating Serum in ‘The Golden Hour’. I love that the Bio Tint contains sun protection, but because I am not using much, and I am adding in the illuminating serum, I don’t like to count on this completely covering me for my SPF. Since we started with MALU applied underneath, you know your skin will be protected!
The Bio Tint is a really amazing tinted moisturizer and has been my go-to this summer. On its own, it actually gives quite a bit of coverage, I would say up to medium, depending on how you apply it. Even with the illuminating serum mixed in, I can still get really great coverage if I apply an additional layer. For my skin, which is on the dryer side though, I found applying it solo left my skin looking a little dry. That is why I decided to add in the oil based highlighter, because it gives the Bio Tint a boost of hydration and gives my skin a more dewy and luminous finish, which is what I prefer. I apply this mixture using just my fingers for a nice sheer application, or with a damp beauty blender if I want to build it up a bit more.
The Maya Chia illuminating serum has become a must have in my collection. It is makeup that doubles as skincare, with their Supercritical Chia Seed Oil as the star ingredient. Mixing it in with the W3LL People Bio Tint is the perfect addition, but I have also mixed it with my face cream on days where I am not wearing makeup at all to give my skin a natural, youthful glow. Of course, this also makes a beautiful highlight worn on the tops of the cheekbones to bring light and life to your skin.
CHEEKS: For my blush, I cannot stop using the RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek in the color ‘Spell’. It is the absolute perfect nude dusty rose shade and gives the cheeks a natural flush as if you have just spent a little time out in the sun. It brings life to my skin with a warmness that I enjoy not only in the summer, but all year round.
For a highlight, I have been gravitating toward the super natural green beauty cult favorite, also by RMS Beauty, the ‘Living Luminizer’. I know, another highlight?! I promise, you will not end up looking like a disco ball. The Living Luminizer is the most natural highlight I have tried. It gives the best lit from within glow to the skin. It is foolproof and nearly impossible to make it look anything BUT natural. I sometimes even apply this under my eyes before applying concealer, if my eyes are looking extra tired (which is always – I am a mom after all! haha) to bring more brightness under my eyes.
EYES: I surprised myself with the eye color I have been using all summer, as it is not one that I typically would have tried, but I sampled it and fell in love. It is the Gressa Eye Tint in ‘Aureo’. This stunning golden champagne color may seem like it’s over the top, but it is actually very easy to wear. I apply a sheer layer to my lids using just my finger and rather than looking overdone or too much for daytime, this actually does a great job of bringing even more light to my face and gives me the appearance of brighter well rested eyes. You can definitely build up the intensity of the color with a brush, and you could easily transition it to a night time look. I love how pretty and natural it looks and how it ties everything together.
Have a few extra minutes?
On its own, this makeup look works for me for every day and I don’t feel like I need anything else. BUT, if you have a few extra minutes and want to add a little more to this simple look, I love adding a tinted lip balm as well as a couple layers of one of my favorite mascaras! And there you have it! A super easy and put together summer makeup look that takes right around 5 minutes to apply!
